KNOW THYSELF
Thousands of years ago, visitors to the Oracle at Delphi in Greece might have seen this inscription on the Temple of Apollo. It is said to be one of the most common maxims used by the oracle herself. Know Thyself is a foundational inquiry in philosophy and psychology alike. While self-inquiry is daunting and perhaps never complete, the movement toward self-knowledge has the potential to change our understanding, and therefore way of being with ourselves, others and the world. An intention to think, feel and live more consciously makes a difference, and moves us toward greater insight and awareness.
Connecting to Nature, Connecting to Self
As the press of emotions and thoughts can become overwhelming, some people are helped by visual images. Directing our focus outside ourselves can be instructive and offer new perspectives. Below are images for reflection or meditation, depending on your preferences. Feel free to use the words or the images separately if that is most useful. The intention is to embrace our emotional life, physical presence and natural world in equal measures. Please proceed gently as self-inquiry without compassion tends to make us only more tense. Seek what serves your curiosity, openness and growth, and leave what does not. If you like an image or phrase, see how it feels to reflect on them for a few minutes a day every day for a week or more.
